A rent-a-captive is an insurance or reinsurance company set up by a captive manager, broker or insurance company as a facility for its clients. It enables the client to benefit from the captive experience without forming their own company.
The rent-a-captive usually retains little or no risk in the program and returns substantially all the underwriting profits and investment income to the insured, in exchange for a fee for "renting" the facility.
Programs are kept apart either by contract or by the formation of segregated accounts or "cells," if the rent-a-captive has registered under the Segregated Accounts Act 2000 or was incorporated by Private Act.
Symphony manages several facilities which are available to participants.
